Perl

Perl

Character created by: Timesprite

Name: Perl Script

Format: Guardian Cadet, v.6.0

Apparent chronological age: 25

Gender: Female

Relatives: Mother, deceased. Father, Victor Script. Uncle, Turbo

Physical appearance: Medium height/build. Charcoal grey skin; wavy orchid hair/eyes. Several long, deep scars running horizontally across her back.

Origins/Background: Perl was a cadet at the Guardian Academy, following her desire to protect systems from the threat of viruses which developed after her mother was killed while Perl was still young. After several years, her interest shifted from the Guardian protocols to hacking--an activity she found an aptitude for, and used for minor mischief.
Eventually her tampering grew more bold, until finally, alterations to a training simulation resulted in the death of her partner Jake. Shamed and filled with self-loathing for her actions, Perl wanted nothing more than to be expelled from the academy, feeling that she had failed in the eyes of her father and uncle, and betrayed her mother's memory. When Turbo instead protected her, offering the mourning girl one last chance to redeem herself she ran - living the life of an outlaw hacker until the day she landed in Turing System. Once there, she hooked up with the Command.Com, Dennis, and his twin sister Johanna. The system was involved in a savage war against viruses bent on destroying it, and the ports to the net were destroyed, trapping Perl in the system.

Perl grew into a fast friendship with Johanna, both girls enamored of the physical aspects of the war against the viruses, while Dennis remained content to manage the strategic end of things. Perl found herself growing steadily more attracted to the young Command.Com, admiring the way his cool, collected manner offset both her and Johanna's personalities.

Just when Perl believed her life was finally beginning to straighten out, tragedy struck. Perl and Johanna were caught in an explosion - Johanna was permanently crippled, and, unable to cope with the loss of her active lifestyle, took her own life. Perl, who had been nearly killed, nevertheless blamed herself for her friend's suicide, deciding that it never would have occurred had she not come to Turing. Only Dennis' ongoing, never-faltering love keeps her from surrendering to the depression and self-loathing she wraps herself in.

When?: Perl appears in Season Three and (non-canon) Season Four.

Personality: Perl constantly berates herself and her abilities, she lacks confidence, despite her no-nonsense exterior and brash talk. Beneath this hardened surface lies the personality of a scared child who never quite found her place. She fears abandonment to such an extreme that she shoves others away, lest she lose them at a later date. Not even her love for Dennis can totally overcome this tendency.

Skills: Perl is an excellent hacker, and combined with the skills she gained at the academy, is more than capable of running Turing's security.

Weaknesses/Bad Habits: She's afraid of the dark, hostile towards friends and newcomers alike, often distant, and prone to periods of poor mental health and heavy drinking.

Likes: Working with her hands; hacking.

Dislikes: People, viruses, finicky machinery.

Cast relationships:

Perl knows both Bob and Mouse from her academy days. She tolerates Bob, although she views him as one of her uncle's lackeys. She both hates Turbo for his refusal to dismiss her from the academy, and is ashamed of how she thinks she must appear to him. Perl struck up an almost sisterly friendship with Mouse, remaining close to her even after their time apart.

Perl encountered Matrix and AndrAIa when their game hopping brought them to Turing. Though she warmed to AndrAIa, mostly due to her similarity to Johanna, her relations with Matrix remain rocky and tenuous at best. Perl has not had significant encounters with the rest of the cast.
